West Australian Symphony Orchestra

The West Australian Symphony Orchestra (WASO) is Western Australia’s largest and busiest performing arts organisation. With a reputation for excellence, engagement and innovation, WASO’s resident company of full-time, professional musicians plays a central role in creating a culturally vibrant Western Australia. WASO is a not for profit company, funded through the federal and state government, ticket revenue and the generous support of the community through corporate and philanthropic partnerships.

WASO’s mission is to touch souls and enrich lives through music. Each year the Orchestra entertains and inspires the people of Western Australia through its concert performances, regional tours, innovative education and community programs, and its artistic partnerships with West Australian Opera and West Australian Ballet.

The Orchestra is led by Principal Conductor and Artistic Adviser Asher Fisch. The Israeli-born conductor is widely acclaimed for his command of the Romantic German repertoire and is a frequent guest at the world’s great opera houses.

Each year the Orchestra performs over 175 concerts with some of the world’s most talented conductors and soloists to an audience in excess of 190,000. An integral part of the Orchestra is the WASO Chorus, a highly skilled ensemble of auditioned singers who volunteer their time and talent.

Wignalls Vintage Music Festival was born on a cold winter's night in 1996, talking with old friends about entertainment facilities and events on the South Coast of Western Australia. Now in it's 18th year, the Great Southern has a truly international standard festival. The event is safe, attractive and affordable to everybody.

Set in the picturesque gardens of Wignalls Winery (7.2 km from the Albany CBD), the outdoor event features outstanding international, national and WA musical acts presenting a wide range of blues and jazz styles. Suitable for families and music enthusiasts alike, this event attracts around 3000 people every year and has become a regular fixture of the burgeoning circuit of winery based festivals.

Eight hours of non-stop music is usually featured with eight or nine acts, from all parts of the world on two stages.  The 2pm to 10pm festival has been an annual event for the last 18 years and is now one of the largest winery festivals in WA. This show is usually sold out so make sure you get your tickets fast!

The festival resembles a Sunday BBQ environment perfect for everyone of all ages. Food stalls around the grounds and a full bar accommodate all tastes. Security is strictly enforced as well as a  bus service from the centre of Albany every half hour from 2pm, returning a number of times from 9:00pm onwards to ensure that our extended family gets home safely, one of our most popular features of the event.

Vancouver Arts Centre

Found on the historic Vancouver Street in Albany, the Vancouver Arts Centre is the region’s key focal point for arts experiences. With three galleries and numerous workshop spaces it offers an inclusive and diverse annual program of arts activities and experiences for anyone aged 2 to 102.

The centre coordinates and hosts touring and local exhibitions, artists in residence, interactive and engaging ArtSpaces, adult and children’s workshops, community projects and a range of diverse events on its own and in partnership with others.  The centre is home to a number of active arts and craft groups and artists and is well used by the local community whilst at the same time warmly welcoming all visitors through its doors.

Built in 1887 and designed by architect George Temple Poole, the sandstone brick building originally served as the Albany Cottage Hospital until 1962. A self guided heritage trail published in our current program allows visitors to explore and appreciate its unique heritage value and its beautiful location.
