Stirk Cottage

Stirk Cottage is the first residence built in Kalamunda. Frederick & Elizabeth Stirk chose land and created a home in the bush which is now Stirk Park. As Fred had to work away to support the family so Elizabeth and her 4 children lived in a tent. Elizabeth did the bulk of the work building the house in 3 sections with Fred only able to help on weekends. Elizabeth also cleared some land to create a cash crop of strawberries and later a dairy herd. The couple went on to have 9 children and eventually the “over-flow” was built in Headingly Road. Stirk Cottage was built in 1881.
